As kids and teens grow up, they go through many rites of passage. They enter middle or high school, hit puberty, and get their learner’s permit. For many kids and teens, the list of rites of passage also includes braces.

For kids and teens with crooked teeth, braces help to correct alignment issues—significantly improving the quality of their smiles while also improving their oral health. They’re also the ideal candidates for treatment. Their jaws are still pliable, making it easier for braces to move the teeth to their proper alignment.

At Bella Orthodontics, we offer braces for kids and teens, as well as Invisalign.

How Do Braces for Kids and Teens Work?

Metal braces are the traditional treatment for crooked teeth. They involve the use of silver metal brackets and wires to gradually shift the teeth into the correct alignment. Small bands called ligatures or O-rings hold the wires in place, which kids and teens can personalize by choosing different colors.

With metal braces, we bond small metal brackets to the surfaces of each tooth. A thin archwire, which we attach with elastic ligatures, connects the brackets.

The wire is also what’s responsible for gradually shifting the teeth into proper alignment. We adjust the wires periodically throughout the treatment until the teeth are where they should be. Generally speaking, treatment takes one to three years to complete.

Orthodontists have used metal braces for decades to correct alignment issues. Today, the brackets are smaller and the materials lighter and more comfortable. They’re still the go-to treatment in many cases.

Looking for a Clear Alternative to Traditional Treatment?

While braces are effective, they are noticeable. Your teen may feel self-conscious about wearing metal on their teeth for up to three years. As an alternative, we offer Invisalign for kids and teens

Invisalign involves the use of clear aligners, which we make from impressions of your teen’s mouth. These aligners offer several significant benefits, including:

  • They’re practically invisible.
  • They’re removable.
  • They’re more comfortable.
  • They require fewer office visits.
  • They generally require a shorter treatment period.

With Invisalign, we provide several sets of aligners at once. Treatment involves changing out these aligners every two weeks to help gradually guide the teeth into their optimal positions.

How Much Do Braces Cost for Kids?

The cost of braces for kids and teens varies. While treatment time with Invisalign is generally shorter, traditional braces tend to cost less. The length of the treatment also plays a role.

Another factor that can influence the cost of your kid’s braces is insurance. Most health insurance plans that provide coverage for orthodontic treatments generally only cover traditional braces. Invisalign is often seen as a cosmetic treatment. As such, many insurance companies won’t cover it. Those that do may only provide partial coverage.
